USAGE OF SEAWATER
The water crisis is a reality in Chile and the world, and needs to be addressed responsibly. With a long-term vision, at Sierra Gorda SCM we have made several investments in resources that allow us to make conscious use of water, ensuring independence in periods of scarcity or drought.
In line with this commitment, we built an aqueduct from Mejillones to the Sierra Gorda SCM plant, which has a pumping capacity of more than 1,500 liters per second, allowing us to use 100% of seawater in the operations of the Company. Of the total, only 10% is desalinated for human use and various industrial processes, while the discarded brine generated is reincorporated into the process.
This is a significant advance in terms of sustainability, proving another important environmental benefit, since the water used comes from a process of recovery of a thermoelectric plant in Mejillones, specifically, for the cooling of electric turbines.
